Hammers goalkeeper Leo Cohen was named Man of the Match for Bellingham. Cohen saved a Victory penalty kick try by the Victory’s Bryanth Garcia.

The winning BUFC goal came from the head of Oscar Jiminez in the 43rd minute. Bellingham sealed the deal in the second half with a 60th minute score from Andrew Weishaar.

“It was a fantastic match! Our team possessed the ball well the entire game and really passed well. We are excited about our team and the new league this year,” said club owner Jeff McIntyre.

“Today’s match was a good to start of the season,” BUFC head coach Lance Calloway told the club’s website. “I was pleased how we linked passes throughout the match and maintained a large percentage of possession today. Today’s Hammer of the match, keeper Leo Cohen was huge for the squad in stopping a weak PK called on us late in the first. That gave us the boost to push us to be better. Andrew Weishaar was dangerous throughout the entire time he was on the pitch. Defensively Joel Grossman was stellar as he cleaned up anything played behind our back line.”

Vancouver head coach Biniam Afenegus said on the Victory Facebook page:  “I thought we did some nice things today but we have a lot of work still to do. We are disappointed to come up here and not get points. We are not where I want us to be quite yet.”
