Yakima United runs past WestSound 5-2

YAKIMA, WA— Yakima United Football Club returned home to Marquette Stadium and put five goals past WestSound FC in a 5-2 win on Friday May 30th.

The early stages of the match were a testing-out process. The two sides had never met before and this was also the first time WestSound had played a league match on natural grass. It was 0-0 until a quick two-goal burst by the Hoppers in the 23rd and 25th minutes.

Freddie Sanchez exploded through the WestSound defense and slotted home from just inside the penalty area to stake YUFC to a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.

In the 25th minute league leading scorer Hector Valdovinos mopped up at the far post for a goal from Memo Silva’s deflected shot.

It was 2-0 at the break but there were still five more goals to be scored.

It was 3-0 in the 53rd when a brilliant move down the left by Cesar Rodriguez saw his cross find Jesse Esquivel who headed it home.

WestSound FC got one back on a fine header from Izzy De Luna in the 64th. It was 3-1.

Juan Viveros hung around the back post and made it 4-1 Yakima in the 75th. It was 5-1 in the 84th when Valdovinos, now with seven goals, got a second on the night off an assist from Cesar Rodriguez.

WestSound FC’s Graham Davidson  converted a penalty kick in the 90th minute for the final result.

Fans were treated to free apples after the match. Kids were given soccer balls. The match attendance was 266.

The Hoppers improve to 3-3-1 with 10 standings points. WestSound FC falls to 1-4-1 and remains on 4 points.

WestSound plays the Spokane Shadow Saturday night May 31 in Spokane. YUFC next plays on Sunday June 8 when the Hoppers travel to Bellingham.
