EPLWA announces first Rock’em Socks Players of the Week honorees

square logo all blackThe Evergreen Premier League has completed its first week of play with six of eight clubs in action. 13 goals were scored and there were numerous saves, take-aways, tackles, moments of admirable teamwork and individual stand-out plays. Two players are honored this week for their performances, which elevated them above the crowd and into the books as our first-ever Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week. Danny Minniti (South Sound FC, Offense) and James Williamson (Vancouver Victory FC, Defense) are this week’s choices. As a part of this recognition both will receive unique, custom EPLWA socks designed especially for the league by Rock’em Apparel.

OFFENSE: Midfielder Danny Minniti scored two goals on Sunday April 26 in Bellingham as his South Sound Shock secured a 5-1 win over Bellingham United. He also assisted on two other goals as the visitors rocked out to a 5-0 advantage after just 37 minutes of play. “Danny’s first goal was amazing,” says South Sound owner John Crouch. The shot came from 20+ yards out and pushed back the nets giving the Shock a 2-0 lead. “He was the standout player of the game. We coined a new term for when you get two goals and two assists, a ‘D-niti’. Danny gave those outside backs hell and positioned himself perfectly defensively to stop the long ball attempts that were coming into our defense from the ‘wingback’ position.” Minniti is a true Tacoman, born in the city and graduated from Wilson High School. He played for St. Mary’s and Waldorf in college and also played for the Tacoma Stars in their return to professional soccer in the MASL this winter.

DEFENSE: Center Back James Williamson had a job to do Sunday afternoon in Yakima: keep the new-look Vancouver Victory FC defense organized against the Yakima United FC Hoppers, eager to please in their home opener. The Victory knew in advance that the pitch at Marquette Stadium was bumpy in places, nearly dirt in others, and thick grass elsewhere. “James played 90 minutes in the back for the Victory,” says Vancouver head coach Aaron Lewis. “He helped our team limit one of the 2014 EPLWA’s most effective offensive teams to very few opportunities throughout the match, while continuously being a threat offensively with his long throws.” Williamson led the V2FC defense in clamping down on the Hoppers, who recorded just two shots during the match. It ended 3-1 for the visitors. James comes to the Victory from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho via Corban University. As luck would have it, James is used to such field conditions. The Corban home field plays in a similar manner and is a home-pitch advantage for the Warriors.
