Cashmere (Bellingham), Watters (Spokane) beat the heat to earn EPLWA Rock’em Socks Player of the Week honors for July 19

The EPLWA Rock’em Socks Players of the Week were earned at the same place last weekend, Bellingham’s Civic Stadium. It was hot both days there but especially on Sunday when the temperatures soared around Washington. The two guys who get socks were ones who kept their cool as their sides recorded big wins from very different places in the table.

N Cashmere 1Offense – Nick Cashmere and his Bellingham United FC mates have suffered through a season that no one could have predicted. Saturday against Wenatchee FC at Civic Stadium the Hammers finally broke through for their first win of the year. They didn’t stop until they had scored six goals and Cashmere had assisted on half of them in a 6-2 victory.

In the 5th minute Cashmere found Tyler Bjork charging in the middle of the box with a pass as Bjork then slid and knocked the ball in net for the opening goal. In the 13th Cashmere recorded his second assist of the night as he played a beautiful ball to Kurtis Pederson, who turned and targeted the corner for a goal. In the 48th Bjork struck for his second goal of the match as Cashmere fed him the ball recording his third assist on the day. Nick’s third assist made the score 5-1 Bellingham.

“Nick had great match,” says Hammers Head Coach N Cashmere 2Lance Calloway. “He was the most dangerous player on the pitch continually pressing the Wenatchee back line. Nick has an incredible ability to attack off the dribble and is very unselfish as he often looks to draw in defenders so as to open up space for his teammates to finish. Nick’s match on Saturday was a great example of that as he set up his teammates three times as well as created numerous other chances for scoring opportunities.”

Nick is no stranger to local Player of the Week honors. In Bellingham’s indoor campaign in the Western Indoor Soccer League (WISL) Cashmere was named WISL Player of the Week for scoring three goals and adding three assists in a Hammers win at Oly Town.

2015-0719-Shadow-TonyWatters-puntDefense – Tony Watters stood tall in goal for the Spokane Shadow on Sunday as they shut out Bellingham United 2-0 at Civic Stadium to clinch the 2015 Evergreen Premier League title. The Whitworth University (Spokane) goalkeeper’s sure hands can now be used to put on some EPLWA socks.

“I knew coming into the match that it was going to be a battle, with Bellingham coming off a big win the day before,” says Tony. “Throughout the game, my back line did a good job of communicating with each other and thwarting a majority of the other teams chances. The couple of times Bellingham broke us down I made sure to cut down the angle, stay big and was able to make some good reaction saves to keep the zero on the board, which is always our focus as a team when on the road.”

2015-0503-Shadow-TonyWattersIn fact, Spokane has NEVER lost a road match. In two EPLWA seasons they are now 12-0-2 away from home. Watters hass been a part of a very solid Spokane defense, sharing time with Jeff Srock in goal. The Shadow have five shutouts on the season. Watters has played in two and a half of them, Srock in two, Joe Scott in one-half.

“This season has been a wonderful opportunity for me to grow as a player and play against quality competition. I learned a lot throughout the summer from training with and watching Jeff Srock and tried to make sure that I took advantage of every opportunity I was given. It has been a pleasure to represent the Shadow this summer,” says Watters.
