YAKIMA, WA— The rivalry between Yakima and Spokane goes back to the days of the PDL in the 1990’s when the Spokane Shadow were battling the Yakima Reds for yearly bragging rights and playoff spots. This Sunday May 1st at 4:30 PM at Marquette Stadium the battle continues as Yakima United FC hosts the Spokane Shadow in an Evergreen Premier League match. History says it will be a close one.
YAKIMA UNITED FC v. SPOKANE SHADOW
Sunday May 1, 2016 – Marquette Stadium – 4:30 PM
-DOUBLEHEADER- YUFC Women (NWPL) v. Shadow Women @2 PM
TICKETS: $10 Adults, $5 Kids 12 and under / includes both matches (cash only)
The Yakima Reds and Spokane Shadow played each other for a decade in the PDL. Then the Spokane Spiders played the Reds. After the Reds moved out of town the rivalry was renewed with the birth of the Evergreen Premier League in 2014, which saw the launch of the lastest era of the Spokane Shadow.
The first EPLWA match between the two was a thriller, picking right up where the previous incarnations left off. Yakima drew first blood with their only win in the new series so far, a 3-2 conquest on May 11, 2014 at Spokane Falls CC Stadium. Since then the Shadow have won three straight, but the final scores have all been close.
The second leg of the dynamic 2014 series between the two sides was also a thriller, won by the Shadow at Marquette Stadium 1-0 with a goal in the 90th minute.
Last season the Shadow wore the crown as defending league champions (they will do the same in 2016) but that didn’t serve to make the matches with Yakima any easier. The Shadow scored the largest margin of victory in the EPLWA series so far, just 2 goals in a 2-0 Spokane win at The Falls in May 2015. The second leg last year was a 2-1 Spokane win at Marquette.
The two-time EPLWA champion Shadow have never lost an away match, going 12-0-2 over two seasons.
The match is a nightcap of a doubleheader. The Spokane Shadow Women and Yakima United Women will both make their historic debuts in the Northwest Premier League (NWPL) in a 2 PM kick off Sunday at Marquette.
The old days of the Shadow and Reds
When the Spokane Shadow folded, Tacoma FC quicky formed to take their place in the PDL. Below is a video reel from Tacoma Tide at Yakima Reds, 2008.
