YAKIMA, WA— Yakima United FC struck back against their northern rivals Wenatchee FC in the latest match in the Evergreen Premier League’s Central Washington derby on Friday night at Marquette Stadium. The 4-0 triumph was the first-ever win for the Hoppers over the Capitals.
Going into Friday’s match Wenatchee FC was 4-0-1 all time against Yakima United. They won the first three matches between 2014-15 and then the clubs drew 3-3 in their last match last year. This season the Capitals took a 5-2 win over the Hoppers at the Apple Bowl.
Pure striker Hector Valdovinos was the difference this night. He’s Yakima’s all time leading scorer and also the second leading scorer in EPLWA history. Hector scored a brace for the Hoppers.
The Hoppers struck twice in a 2-minute span in the first half. Missael Lopez made it 1-0 in the 19th when he parted WFC defenders and delivered a near post goal. Valdovinos got the first of his brace in the 21st when he shrugged off a swarm of Capitals in the box to turn and finish.
In the 56th it was 3-0 Hoppers when Hector finished his brace in similar style from 3 yards out. The final was 4-0 when William Pineda made up for an earlier open chance by finishing this one ahead of the Wenatchee defense in the 78th.
In previous encounters the Capitals had outscored the Hoppers 16-6. In 2014 Wenatchee swept Yakima 3-1 and 4-0. In 2015 Wenatchee beat the Hoppers 1-0 and YUFC lost a 2-0 lead in an eventual 3-3 draw. On May 8 of this season at the Apple Bowl Wenatchee took a 5-2 win.
