Shock debut with big win over previously unbeaten Stars


The second week of play in the 2017 Evergreen Premier League season is complete. The weekend featured the debut of the WPSS Shock at Washington Premier’s fields in Puyallup and the first home match for Yakima United at Sozo Sports Complex.

Seattle Stars 2-0 Yakima United

KENT, WA—The Seattle Stars (2-1-0) got goals from Tyler Bjork (penalty kick) and Alex Castillo to move past visiting Yakima United (0-1-1) at French Field in Kent on Saturday night May 6.

Hoppers goalkeeper Jacob Rhoads (see video) took Castillo out with a two-armed tackle leading to the PK in the 17th minute. Less than 10 minutes later it was Castillo doing the scoring as he followed up a chance in front of goal in the 26th. It was all the Stars would need to win two games in a row to start the season for the first time in their history.

Oly Town FC 1-3 Bellingham United

LACEY, WA—Oly Town FC (0-1-1) played their second straight home match at South Sound Stadium in Lacey on Sunday afternoon May 7. Bellingham United (1-1-0) rallied from down 1-0 at the half to claim a 3-1 win. Read the Oly Town match report here.


The Artesians came out firing on all cylinders, controlling possession for most of the first half of play, peppering the Bellingham defense with 11 shots. Connor Desmond opened the scoring in the 20th minute when he streaked down the right side and collected a beauty of a pass from Gabriele Zaccagnini and beat United goalkeeper Joseph Worley one-on-one to take a 1-0 lead.

In the second half the Hammers got a penalty kick conversion from Rene Caro (50th minute) a nifty volley from Richard Henderson (72nd minute, see video) and a clincher from Christian Garcia (87th minute) to claim three points.

Yakima United 1-1 Olympic Force

YAKIMA, WA—The Hoppers (0-1-1) hosted their first  league match at the new Sozo Sports Complex on Sunday May 7 against the Olympic Force (0-1-1).

Bennett Bugbee gave the visiting Force the lead in the 58th minute when he took a perfectly weighted ball from Enrique Hidalgo and chipped the Yakima goalkeeper.

Juan Licea got the Hoppers even in the 65th minute. Both sides had chances for  winner right until the final whistle.

WPSS Shock 5-1 Seattle Stars

PUYALLUP, WA—The Washington Premier South Sound Shock made their league debut at the Washington Premier Fields Complex with a resounding rout over the previously unbeaten Seattle Stars.

It was the Stars who would actually lead for much of the first half. Carlos Betancourt gave the visitors the lead with his first goal of the season in the 25th minute on an assist from Tyler Bjork.

It got rocky before the break for Seattle though as the Shock would run off three straight goals. In the 37th minute Micah Wenzel converted a penalty kick. In the 43rd minute Scott Hanson connected with a JJ Schmeck corner kick to give the Shock a 2-1 lead. Just one minute later Wenzel got his second of the half, this time on a ball whipped in for the header by Isidro Prado-Huerta. It could have been worse. Just one  more minute after that (45th) Seattle Stars goalkeeper Carlos Rodriguez was red-carded for kneeing JJ Schmeck in the box. The resulting penalty kick was taken by Cody Crook but was saved by Seattle sub. keeper Cooper Hutchins. 3-1 Shock at the break.

The Stars couldn’t make any headway in the second half. Instead they surrendered two more goals as the rout was on. In the 53rd minute WPFC graduate Kyle Rivers scored on a through ball from JJ Schmeck. In the 55th minute Schmeck got his own score on a ball from Branden Madsen. 5-1 final.
